What is the Business?
The business that has been chosen to be created is an eco-friendly café that specialises in healthy and organic food and beverages. The café will be eco-friendly in terms of the food itself, in the way it is sourced and produced. As well as the materials used throughout the business by using recycling methods and using eco-friendly materials. The café will also be eco-friendly in the larger scheme of things by using solar panels on the roof as its main source of power as well as other elements such as rainwater tanks.
In addition to being eco-friendly the café also has an individual aspect to it by being pet friendly. The café will be open to all pet owners (no matter what the pet) during certain times of the day and in specific areas of the café.
Location:
The location of the Café will be situated on the Esplanade Road in Applecross. This links up to a major highway called Canning Highway. This leads to a greater flow of foot traffic and also car traffic giving more opportunity and exposure for the Café. The location is picturesque offering customers a view of the Swan River South. The location is also situated near luxury homes and apartments giving the café the opportunity for potential repeat customers. The Cafe will also be housed around a small business district which in turn offers a great morning and lunch rush for the cafe.
Hours of Operation:
6:00am – 4:00pm.
These opening hours are based on the fact that the café will be operating a breakfast and lunch menu. The café is also open early morning, aimed to attract the office workers from the surrounding businesses.
Target Market:
The business has a target market of 18 years old and 60 years young. The reason for this target market has to do with the location and the current scope of operations (Healthy food and Eco-run store). The Canning Highway commute during the mornings will offer the café exposure to mostly working class adults ranging from 25 – 50. The public transport (Train station and buses) will expose the café to a University based market. This is due to the Curtain students coming off the trains to catch linking buses to Curtain University. This brings in the 18 – 25 market. A lot of the residential properties situated around the café are from an upper class demographic which entail the 50 – 60 year market. The business will also be targeting a market that caters for pet owners.
Scope of Operations:
The main operation of the café is to provide a dine inn and take-away healthy food option. The menu will be based on a breakfast and lunch timeframe, providing light meals and snacks available throughout the day.
The foods will include both hot and cold options including; sandwiches, salads, pastas, pastries, muffins and other seasonal food changing throughout the year. The drinks menu will also include hot and cold options including; shakes, coffees, tea, juices and smoothies. The café will also offer a pet menu made up of snack and treats for various animals to cater for the pet friendly aspect of the business.
Points of difference to others:
The health store will be run in accordance to an eco-friendly manner. This means that packaging of products will be bio degradable and recyclable. The store will also promote new customers to purchase a re-usable Coffee canister and to bring back in to refill for hot drinks. The means in power will be conducted through solar paneling power giving the store a green power source.
All vegetables and fruit purchased from the store will be primarily being taken from the stores organic supplier. Garnishes such as mint will be grown at the store and used in the products.
In terms of online applications and Information Systems the store will use applications helping customers purchase coffee on smart-phones. This is ideal for a time poor customers who need the coffee already made before coming into the store.
Staff:
The store will consist of a Manager working as a full-time employee, the second employee will be a second in command (2IC) which will be placed under a part-time full-time basis. Two experienced baristas and two casual retail sales assistants will be involved in customer interactions and direct sales.
The staff will be rostered in accordance to the operating hours of the store. The ideal layout off the store will consist of two managerial employees (Store Manager and Second in Command). Two baristas and two sales people to help in the busy on peak rushes of breakfast and lunch-time. On off-peak days it is ideal to have One Store Manager, One Barista and One sales person or (2IC).
